The degree of
Master of Library and Information Science
Virtual Convocation
2018
PROFILE
Current residence: San Jose, CA, US
I wanted to earn a masters degree because:
My interest in librarianship began in high school to marry my interest in the Fine Arts and Humanities with a career dedicated to the preservation and propagation of materials related to that passion. I also saw libraries as safe havens of learning and escape from daily life. This interest led me to volunteering in a school media center and then to working at a public library.
While earning my degree, my greatest supporters were:
My family, including Mom and Dad Jones & Mom and Dad Dunavant and my siblings by birth and by marriage, has been a rock on my MLIS journey. Special thanks go to my husband, who not only supported me every step of the way, but also spent many late nights staying up with me while I struggled to meet deadlines and never wavered in his confidence and pride in my abilities. I'd also like to thank my best friend and chwaer annwyl, Aoife Hart, for all her support and advice as I struggled through conference presentations and the stresses of grad school!
Thanks also go to the iSchool administrators and faculty for all of their support. Especially, I would like to thank Dr. Pat Franks, who introduced me to virtual world librarianship through VCARA and who has served as supervisor, instructor, and friend over the past few years.
Finally, I would like to thank Susan Burrell who took me under her wing so many years ago and set me on this path!
While in the program, I met classmates from:
I have met classmates from all over the United States in addition to classmates in Canada and countries in South America as well.
What I liked best about online learning was:
I love the flexibility of online courses--especially not having to commute to classes! I also loved learning from instructors and networking with classmates and professionals around the country and world.
What I enjoyed most about my experience at the SJSU School of Information was:
I most enjoyed my time in the Virtual Center for Archives and Records Administration (VCARA) student group, where I learned how to build virtual objects and exhibits, presented at conferences, and networked with students, instructors, and other professionals.
I plan to use my degree to:
My professional goals are broad, and I have taken a wide breadth of courses, focused on developing and identifying transferable skills, and participated in different types of organizations and activities throughout my time at the iSchool for this reason. My professional goals include providing reference services and programming for all age groups; preserving the human experience; and curating digital materials.
I am currently the Assistant Director at the Community Virtual Library (CVL) and the Lead Curator for the Virtual Worlds Database (https://communityvirtuallibrary.wordpress.com/virtual-worlds-database/). I plan to continue with these positions for the foreseeable future, connecting virtual communities as well as researching and promoting digital literacy.
In addition to virtual worlds librarianship, I am also interested in virtual cataloging, reference, archival, and digital curation/asset management work.
Now that I have completed the program, I'm most looking forward to:
In addition to a library and information science professional, I am also a creative writer. I am looking forward to having more time to commit to my writing as well as the opportunity to design and implement creative writing programs and events at the Community Virtual Library!
