The degree of
Master of Library and Information Science
Virtual Convocation
2018
PROFILE
Current residence: Simi Valley, CA, US
I wanted to earn a masters degree because:
Librarianship is a field I truly feel I was meant for, and that feeling of mine only grew as I advanced through the steps to earning this degree. My love of books and literature were of course the initial motivator but as I took more courses and became familiar with the varied work behind library and information science, the more I understood the human aspect at the heart of this field. Freedom of access to information is a right that no healthy society can do without, and I plan to use what I have learned to help as many people as possible gain access to the information they need and want.
While earning my degree, my greatest supporters were:
My mom, who is an unending source of inspiration, and my dad, grandpa, and all of my family, as well as my close friends Anne and Sarah, who are always there to help boost my confidence; all of my professors for passing along their wisdom, but especially Dr. Anthony Bernier, for being an excellent faculty advisor when I worked as a copy editor for the Student Research Journal; and my fellow staff at Simi Valley Public Library, for being gracious enough to give me numerous opportunities for professional growth as I worked to earn this degree.
While in the program, I met classmates from:
More places than I ever thought I would! I worked on group projects with people from almost every time zone in the US, as well as Canada and even Germany!
What I liked best about online learning was:
The freedom to work at my local public library without having to worry about travel or working around scheduled class times. Since I didn’t have to worry about those things, I was able to help out at home a lot more without any added stress. Being able to do my homework at my own pace, and in my pajamas, was also an added bonus.
What I enjoyed most about my experience at the SJSU School of Information was:
Exploring my options for career paths. When I first started, I didn’t have any definite feelings for any particular career path, but taking different electives helped me settle on Cataloging and Metadata, as well as Young Adult Services. I’m also immensely grateful for the chance to work on the Student Research Journal as part of the Editorial Team. That experience was so much fun and I learned a lot that will help me in my future professional work.
I plan to use my degree to:
Help people find the information they want, which sounds a bit obvious, but freedom of information has become something very important me, both from a professional standpoint, and a personal one. In my work as library assistant at SVPL, helping guide people to the particular book or resource they are looking for is an extremely rewarding feeling.
Now that I have completed the program, I'm most looking forward to:
A break! Just a short break, and then onto the next hurdle of landing my first MLIS position. For now, I’m stockpiling all of the books I’ve wanted to read for the past couple of years but couldn’t find time for because I was too busy learning how to be a librarian.
