I wanted to earn a masters degree because:
I wanted to earn a masters degree because I wanted to push myself to learn new things and change my career. I have always loved learning and libraries have always played a major part in sating my curiosity to know more. With this degree I hope to share my knowledge with others and inspire them to want to know more about the world around them.
While earning my degree, my greatest supporters were:
I don't think I could have gotten through this rigorous program without the help of my husband James and my good friend Luci. Every time I doubted my abilities or was sure I wouldn't succeed both of them would be there to reassure me that I was being far too hard on myself. Luci was always there to proof-read my papers and make sure that I had everything spelled properly, and James was always there to talk me down from the edge of a stress-induced pity party. Without these two I don't think I would have been as successful as I was. Many of my other friends were great resources for giving me good distractions when I needed to just get away from work and most of all they always believed in my abilities even if I couldn't do it myself.
While in the program, I met classmates from:
In this program I met classmates from all over the United States. Actually, during my first semester I had probably one of the most challenging group projects to complete because we all lived in different time zones. It was definitely challenging to coordinate all of our schedules to get time to meet online to work on our project but we managed it. Even though it was a challenge it definitely taught me a lot about the importance of flexibility and making things happen.
What I liked best about online learning was:
What I liked most about online learning was the flexibility it provided me. I work full-time and knowing that I didn't have to leave work and then drive straight to a school to go into a classroom and learn was great. It gave me the ability to asynchronously learn on my own time and in whatever places I felt most comfortable. It was especially nice if I was in the car on a long car ride I could just pull out my phone and catch up in class or even use my iPad during lunch breaks at work to keep up with discussion boards.
What I enjoyed most about my experience at the SJSU School of Information was:
I enjoyed the professors and the other students I worked with during my program. Everyone was very nice and helpful; if there was ever any kind of technical difficulty I knew that I could let my professors know and we'd work together to try and figure out the solution. My peers were also amazing to work with because any time we had any issues with meeting or with our technology we wouldn't let it get us down we'd just come up with some creative solutions in the moment so we could keep working. It definitely helped me to stay cool under pressure and to just believe that we'd overcome whatever adversity we faced.
I plan to use my degree to:
I plan to use my degree to work in an academic library, preferably within the realm of technology services. I have always had a knack for technology and I am always curious to learn more when it comes to technology. If I can't get a job specifically in an academic library I hope to use my technology-centered skills to work in any industry that has information they want to make sure is easily searchable.
Now that I have completed the program, I'm most looking forward to:
Now that I've completed the program I am most looking forward to having some free time to myself. For the last three years, between school and my full-time job I haven't had much time for myself which means I haven't been afforded much time to create anything. I love the arts, so I can't wait to have some free time to be able to explore some of my neglected art projects.
