Maria Aguirre:
I’ve never known any young woman to be so driven and going after what she wants. I known her to have a job and be a full student. It’s hard work but some way she made it work. I’m very proud of her accomplishments as a parent. You always want to see your kids be more than you. I’ve seen her work so hard but at the same time she knows when to take a beat and have fun as well. as her mother, I am so proud of her!

PROFILE
Current residence: Gardena, CA, US
I wanted to earn a masters degree because:
I aspire to become a youth librarian because of my experience working at an elementary school, where students are encouraged to read every chance they get, both in and out of the classroom. I’ve observed firsthand how much children enjoy diving into graphic novels and classic literature. This passion for reading, especially at such a young age, inspires me to create a space in the library where kids can explore diverse genres, discover new favorite books, and develop a lifelong love for reading. As a youth librarian, I want to foster that excitement and help guide young readers to stories that will engage and inspire them.
While earning my degree, my greatest supporters were:
my parents (mom and dad), older brother, aunts, cousins, coworkers, and friends.
While in the program, I met classmates from:
all over the United States. I even made close friends who are within driving distance in Southern California.
What I liked best about online learning was:
What I liked best about online learning was the flexibility it provided, allowing me to work at my own pace. This self-directed approach gave me the freedom to balance my academic responsibilities with gaining real-world experience in the field I’m passionate about. I could tailor my learning schedule around my work commitments, which allowed me to focus on building the skills and knowledge necessary for the position I want to pursue. The ability to simultaneously work and study has not only reinforced my understanding of the course material but also allowed me to apply what I’ve learned directly to my professional growth, ensuring that I’m continuously developing in both areas. This balance between education and hands-on experience is what made online learning such a valuable and rewarding experience for me.
What I enjoyed most about my experience at the SJSU School of Information was:
What I enjoyed most about my experience at the SJSU School of Information was the opportunity to collaborate and learn from fellow students who are already working in the library field. Their firsthand experiences, insights, and practical knowledge added an invaluable layer to our discussions and coursework, giving me a deeper understanding of the various challenges and innovations happening in libraries today. Being part of a learning community with such diverse professional backgrounds enriched my perspective and inspired me to think critically about how I can apply what I’ve learned to my own career goals.<br />

Additionally, I appreciated the free Zoom conferences offered throughout the semester on specific library-related topics. These sessions provided unique opportunities to dive deeper into current trends and issues within the field, often featuring guest speakers and experts who shared their knowledge on everything from emerging technologies to inclusive library practices. These conferences helped me stay informed about the broader landscape of librarianship and further enhanced my professional development outside of traditional coursework.
I plan to use my degree to:
I plan to use my degree to become a youth librarian, where I can foster a love of reading and learning in children. With my education and hands-on experience, I aim to create inclusive, engaging programs and curate diverse collections that reflect the interests and needs of young readers. I want to help students not only discover new stories and genres but also develop critical thinking and research skills that will benefit them throughout their lives. Ultimately, I hope to create a welcoming library environment that inspires curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of literature and programs.
Now that I have completed the program, I'm most looking forward to:
Now that I’ve completed the program, I’m excited to take the next step and start pursuing a position in the library field. It feels like everything I’ve learned and experienced has led me to this point, and I’m ready to put my skills to work. While I know the job search can be challenging, I’m genuinely looking forward to finding the right opportunity where I can make a real difference—whether that’s helping kids discover their next favorite book or creating programs that spark curiosity. It’s an exciting chapter ahead, and I’m eager to see where it takes me!
