The degree of
Master of Library and Information Science
Virtual Convocation
2025
PROFILE
Current residence: Escondido, CA, US
I wanted to earn a masters degree because:
I want to apply my teaching and research experience in Spanish language, literature and culture to a position in information literacy, reference or subject librarianship in an academic library setting.
While earning my degree, my greatest supporters were:
my wife Cynthia Meléndrez, who went above and beyond to support this pivot in my career.
While in the program, I met classmates from:
all over California virtually via social media groups and in Canvas discussion posts.
What I liked best about online learning was:
being able to complete this degree and not have to move. This is especially important because there is no university that offers an MLIS program within driving distance from me.
What I enjoyed most about my experience at the SJSU School of Information was:
the knowledgeable and approachable professors. Despite not taking an asynchronous course, their enthusiasm for their area of expertise came through in their video lectures. Several held optional zoom meetings, which helped to further build a rapport with students.
I plan to use my degree to:
apply my 20-year teaching experience in a university classroom setting to an academic library setting and continue to help students achieve their education goals.
Now that I have completed the program, I'm most looking forward to:
teaching my last classes as a professor and finding a position in an academic library.
