PROFILE
Current residence: Orange, CA, US
I wanted to earn a masters degree because:
The library is a place where all people can connect and learn. This is something that I have always loved ever since going to the library as a child. I want to always be able to support the library in the best way that I can, mainly by working there and showing others why the library is such a great place. I currently work in a library, so earning a degree is necessary to eventually become a librarian.
While earning my degree, my greatest supporters were:
My parents and my brother were my constant go-to people. Whether I was looking to brainstorm or just needed a sounding board they were always there for me. Also, they were there for all my stressful days and gave me the optimism to believe that everything will work out for the best.
While in the program, I met classmates from:
The great thing about this program was meeting so many people. I met people that were near my hometown, while also meeting people from other states: Oregon, Colorado, New York, and more.
What I liked best about online learning was:
Working full-time, I was always worried that going back to school just wouldn't work out. What I liked best about online learning was that it made the balancing act between work and school possible. Some of the classes that I took had only one or two synchronous meetings, while others were entirely asynchronous.
What I enjoyed most about my experience at the SJSU School of Information was:
I enjoyed learning more about the processes behind certain aspects of librarianship. The classes that I took have filled a gap. In my work experiences I have learned a lot on the job, but there are some aspects of librarianship that I had not experienced in life before. I enjoyed gaining a new perspective and learning from others who have had experiences outside of the field of public librarianship.
I plan to use my degree to:
I connected most to classes that focused on the "why." The why, for me, is that I love helping people to find information and to learn. I want to use my degree to become a librarian who pays attention to the needs of the people within the community in which I work and to ensure that the library contains diverse and inclusive books and programs so that all people may feel represented.
Now that I have completed the program, I'm most looking forward to:
Seeing what new knowledge I can find. It's time to discover my next learning adventure and see where it takes me. I have toyed with the idea of getting a second masters degree (which I am still thinking on). I have also thought that it might be time to take a step back from formal education and explore my other personal interests, such as the arts, languages, and world mythologies. Professionally, I look forward to sharing new ideas with my library and striving for a position as a librarian.
